Stump Grinding Pricing
Firm written quote in 2 hours. No bait-and-switch. The number we quote is the number you pay.
Each job is quoted firm based on the stump and any add-ons you choose · Quote locked in writing, valid 30 days · No surprise add-ons at completion
Send a photo of your stump with a tape measure across the widest point and we’ll send a firm written quote back — typically within 2 hours during business hours. The quote breaks out the standard grind separately from any add-ons, so you can see exactly what you’re paying for.
Once you accept, that’s the number — locked for 30 days, no escalation on completion day, no “discovered issues” surcharge. The only way the price changes is if you ask us to do additional work after we arrive, and we’ll quote that on-site, in writing, before touching it.
What Affects Your Quote
Every stump is quoted on the work it actually requires. Here’s what we look at:
Stump diameter
The biggest single factor. We measure the widest point of the root ball at ground level, including any flare beyond the visible trunk. Bigger stumps take longer and put more wear on the cutter wheel.
Number of stumps
Multiple stumps in one visit means lower per-job overhead — equipment’s already on site, mats are already down, truck’s already in the driveway. Three or more stumps in one visit gets 10% off the combined grinding cost. Send photos of all of them in one message.
Grind depth
Standard depth is 4–6 inches below grade, which covers grass and most landscaping. Deep grind at 12–18 inches is needed for replanting in the same spot, sod, deck or fence posts, or concrete — quoted as an add-on alongside the standard grind.
Add-on services
Chip haul-away, topsoil fill, grass seeding, fence section removal, and surface root removal are each priced separately and shown as line items. Pick any combination — we never bundle them in without you asking.
Access
If we can walk the machine straight to the stump, standard rate. Narrow gates, hillsides, or long carries may add setup time — always disclosed in the quote, never discovered on the day.
Service area
Travel inside our service area is included — no trip fee, and no surcharge for one town over another. We’re based in Camas and cover east Vancouver and Clark County from there. Out-of-area work more than about 45 minutes out is quoted separately.
What’s Included — and What Isn’t
- Travel within the service area — no trip fee
- Ground protection mats
- Grinding to 4–6 inches below grade (standard)
- Chips spread and leveled across the depression as mulch — not left in a pile
- Cleanup of the immediate work area
- Before and after photos
- One-year re-grind guarantee — if we missed a piece of stump or didn’t grind to the agreed depth, we come back and finish it at no charge
- Chip haul-away. By default chips stay on site as mulch. Quoted as an add-on if you want them gone.
- Topsoil fill. Quoted with your job. Requires chip haul-away first.
- Grass seeding. Quoted with your job. Requires haul-away and topsoil fill first.
- Fence section removal & reinstall. Quoted with your job. 8-foot section maximum.
- Surface root removal — varies by extent. Flag visible roots when you request the quote.
- Tree removal. We grind stumps. We don’t fell trees.
- Sprinkler or private utility repair. We call 811 before every job, but 811 doesn’t mark private lines — those are yours to flag.
Add-On Services
Optional work beyond the standard grind. Priced upfront in your quote — never added at the end.
| Add-on | When to ask for it | Requires |
|---|---|---|
| Deep grind (12–18″ below grade) | Replanting in the same spot, sod, deck or fence post, small concrete slab | — |
| Fence section removal & reinstall | The stump is behind a fence the machine can’t get around | Sound fence, 8 ft max |
| Surface root removal | Visible roots radiating out from the stump that you want gone | — |
| Chip haul-away | You don’t want the chips left on site as mulch | — |
| Topsoil fill | Level the depression with soil after grinding | Chip haul-away |
| Grass seeding | Seed the area so grass grows back | Haul-away + fill |
Add-ons are priced with your job and shown as separate line items in the quote, so you can see what each one costs before you accept anything.
If you want a fully restored lawn, the work has to go in order: chips out, fill in, seed on top. We won’t skip a step, because skipping one breaks the next.
- Topsoil fill needs chip haul-away first. With chips still in the hole there’s nowhere for soil to go — it sits on top and washes away.
- Seeding needs topsoil first. Seed won’t germinate in raw wood chips, and it won’t take on an unleveled depression.
Ask for the full sequence — haul-away, fill, and seed — and we’ll quote it as one package alongside the grind. That’s what most homeowners going for a clean lawn end up with.
About fence section removal
Sometimes the stump is in a backyard with no gate wide enough for the machine — we need a 36-inch minimum opening. When the only way in is pulling a section of fence, we’ll do it.
- The quoted fee covers removal, careful storage during the work, and reinstallation
- Plus materials if posts, brackets, screws, or boards need replacing
- 8-foot section maximum — beyond that it’s a different conversation
- The fence has to be sound enough to survive it. If it’s rotted or leaning, removal could damage it past reinstalling. We’ll tell you upfront and let you decide whether to proceed or call a fence contractor first.
Standard Grind vs. Deep Grind
Most homeowners need a standard grind. Deep grind is for specific projects — here’s how to tell.
Standard grind — 4 to 6″ below grade
The default, and right for most jobs. Enough for:
- Reseeding grass over the spot
- Planting shrubs or perennials nearby
- General “make the stump go away” landscaping
- Most residential cleanups
Remaining roots rot naturally over five to ten years and won’t cause problems for any of the above.
Deep grind — 12 to 18″ below grade
Add-on, quoted with your job. Required for:
- Replanting a tree in the exact same spot
- Installing sod — needs depth for root establishment
- Pouring a slab, patio, or driveway
- Setting fence posts or deck footings near the old stump
- Construction prep that excavates the area
If any of these are your plan, say so when you request the quote and we’ll spec both so you can compare.
Tell us your end goal — replanting, sod, a deck post, whatever it is — when you send the photo, and we’ll quote both options side by side. Guessing high costs you money; guessing low means doing it twice.
Getting an Accurate Number
Diameter drives the price, so the quote is only as good as the measurement. The most common mistake is running the tape across the trunk instead of the full root ball — which can be half again as wide on a mature maple.
We walk through exactly what to photograph, with good and bad examples, on the quote page.
How to Measure & Photograph Your StumpPayment — At Completion, On Site
Every method below is accepted when the work is done. No card surcharges, no convenience fees, no minimum to use a card. The price you accepted is the price you pay.
Tap to Pay
Fastest option — about thirty seconds on Nick’s phone. Apple Pay, Google Pay, or any contactless card.
Credit or debit
Any major card, run on site. No surcharge and no minimum.
Bank payment (ACH)
Direct from your account through the secure payment link in your Client Hub.
Check or cash
Still perfectly welcome. Receipt goes to your Client Hub the same day either way.
Card on file
Can’t be there at completion? Authorize a card when you accept the quote and we’ll charge the balance when the work is done, then text you the receipt and photos.
Net-30 for trade partners
Tree services, landscapers, fence installers, and property managers bill monthly on terms rather than paying per job.
You pay when the work is done, not before. No card on file to book, no money down to hold a date, no prepayment. Accept the quote, we show up, we grind, you look at it, you pay.
Two exceptions:
- Jobs over $1,000 total — 25% at acceptance. A job that size blocks out real scheduled time.
- Work more than about 45 minutes from Camas — $150, covering the travel and setup. Inside our normal service area this never applies.
Either way the deposit is applied to your balance, so you only pay the remainder at completion. At our typical job size and service area, most homeowners never run into either one.
Pricing FAQ
Do you have a minimum?
$150. If you’ve got one small stump, you’ll hit the minimum — but it’ll be quick and we’ll be in and out. If you have two or three small ones, bundling them into a single visit is much better value, and three or more gets you 10% off the combined grinding cost.
Is the quote firm, or an estimate?
Firm, in writing, valid 30 days, locked to the documented diameter from your photo. The only thing that changes it is you asking for additional work after we arrive — and we’ll quote that on site, in writing, before doing it.
Do you charge more for some towns than others?
No. Same rate across our service area, and travel within it is included. Some grinders quote Camas and Washougal higher because it’s a long drive for them. We’re based in Camas, so it isn’t.
What happens to the wood chips?
By default they stay on site — spread and leveled across the depression as natural mulch, not left in a pile. If you’d rather have them gone, chip haul-away is quoted as an add-on based on volume.
Can you make the lawn look like nothing was ever there?
Yes, but it’s a sequence: haul the chips, fill with topsoil, seed on top. Ask for the whole sequence when you request the quote and we’ll price it as one package alongside the grind.
Do you take cards? Is there a fee?
Yes, and no. Tap to Pay, credit, debit, ACH, check, or cash — all accepted at completion, no surcharge, no minimum.
What if I’m not happy with the result?
We walk the work area with you before we leave, so anything that needs addressing gets caught while we’re still there. Beyond that, the one-year re-grind guarantee covers a missed piece of stump or a grind that didn’t hit the agreed depth — we come back and finish at no charge.
